When an elderly patient is brought in as a level-1 “trauma”, it is frequently a “medical problem” and trauma is a secondary, minor issue. Generally, there is more noise and chaos when the patient arrives as a pre-notification trauma v a pre-notification medical note.
The care of the patient is rather straightforward. Intubate the patient because she is unresponsive. Get a head CT. The patient had a bad hemorrhagic stroke. Subsequently, our main job is to relay the bad news to the family and discuss goals of care.
